Palsians Allies Lusitanians Miscellaneous

Palsians

Prince Arislan (1):

Prince Arislan has a lot in common with many of those who are acquainted with him. He and his friends are all despised by his father. While King Andragoras had wanted a bloodthirsty tyrant son to take his place if something were to ever happen to either him or the kingdom, what he got was an idealistic dreamer with an unerring passion for peace. After being one of the few Palsian survivors of the bloodbath battle that commences during the introduction, Arislan, with the help of his protector Daryoon, seeks refuge and allies to recapture the kingdom of Palse and its capital, Ekubatana. His idealistic goals influence his radical decisions (the abolition of slavery, for instance) that help some and shock many. But, his ultimate goal is the restoration of his capital and to find the whereabouts of his father.

Daryoon (1):

After being charged with treason and cowardice by the King himself just before the pivotal battle between the ultra-religious Lusitanians and the brave and courageous Palsians, Daryoon was sent by his uncle Vaphreze to look after Prince Arislan with his very own life since he was the rightful heir to the throne. Daryoon has, since then, done a very good job offering the Prince protection, advice, and complete friendship. Daryoon may be named the greatest warrior of Palse, and, very probably, the world. Defeating most ordinary soldiers as if they were mincemeat, Daryoon also battles some extraordinary warriors with almost the same amount of ease. Some might say that the only trait that surpasses his skill is his kindness and generosity.

Narsus (1):

Although Narsus is an extremely skilled warrior, his battle prowess is foreshadowed greatly by his expert wisdom and clockwork mind. While some opposing generals and advisors try to match wits with Narsus by being two steps ahead of the game, Narsus beats them by at least ten. By being cunning, crafty, alert, and logical, Narsus predicts whatever dangers befall the Prince and whatever measures need to be taken in order to reclaim the kingdom. Before he started advising the Prince, however, Narsus was Andragoras' personal advisor, but some of his advice on what to do about the slave trade...angered him. So, he was banished to a secluded life in the mountains with his servant boy, Elam where he resided as a lonely painter until Arislan arrived with Daryoon to request of his services. Narsus also has some strange characteristics that have nothing to do with his wisdom or fighting ability, but with his sexuality. To learn more about it, go to the
Interpretations Page.

Elam (1):

Very little attention is given to Narsus's personal servant, Elam. While he is sometimes given the most dangerous and embarassing jobs, he is also out of the spotlight half the time. Elam has a good relationship with his master, who claims that he will free him from slavery at the right time after educating and instructing him in the ways of life. While Elam is treated as if he were Narsus's son, he is also Narsus's best friend.

Andragoras (1):

Andragoras, in relation to his kingdom, can easily be described to be hated by some and feared by all. After foolishly ignoring advice to call off the attack on the mist-filled battlefield, Andragoras greatly paid the price for his hardheadedness. After being captured by Silvermask, Andragoras is presently in the deepest darkest dungeon in all of Lusitania, waiting for salvation and close to dying in misery.

Tahamenay (1):

Although little focus is given on her character, one of the most obvious facts related to Tahamenay is that she is the extremely beautiful wife of Andragoras, mother of Arislan, and Queen of Palse. After being captured during the fall of Ekubatana, Queen Tahamenay is under the power of the bumbling King of Lusitania, Inokentis VII.

Vaphreze (1):

Quoted by Andragoras as "his best general," Vaphreze loyally gave his life protecting his king very early in the story. After the defeat of the Army of Palse, Andragoras and Vaphreze were cornered by a general named Silvermask who cut Vaphreze down with a single strike. He was, however, monumentally important in giving his final orders to Daryoon before the battle (and his death) to protect the crown prince at all costs.

Allies of Arislan

Gieve (1):

Gieve did not acquaint the Prince until long after the battle. In fact, Arislan had no idea who he was or what his motives were until the end of the first OAV. By putting a tortured Palsian soldier out of his misery, Gieve attained fame and almost fortune by the city-dwellers of Ekubatana. His reasons for helping the poor man, however, were not exactly righteous. Gieve lives only for money, women, and himself. His selfish attitude is probably attributed to his poverty-stricken life and his low social status, but it could also have been developed by his travels as a wandering minstrel. Eventually, he learns to help Arislan, but not, at first, out of kindness and pity, but for his adoration of the fair Pharangese.

Pharangese (1):

Although she is both beautiful and deadly, little is really told about the Lady Pharangese mostly because she rarely says anything that doesn't have any cosmic significance. Being a follower of the Goddess of Misra, Pharangese has the power and the wisdom to communicate with the spirits around her and detect their moods. She was chosen to protect the Crown Prince because she was the most beautiful and most skilled out of all of her fellow priestesses (or so she claims.) She performs her tasks of aiding the Prince not out of love for Palse or Arislan himself, but of her hatred for the God-inflicting Lusitanians.

Quishward (2):

As a commanding general of the forces of Peshawal, a neighboring ally of Palse, Quishward uses his powerful army and his trademark twin swords to bring order and justice and to help Arislan reclaim and rebuild the once mighty kingdom.

Bachman (2):

Although this general seems to have pledged loyalty to Arislan, Bachman's true intentions are obscured by a past secret that has yet to surface...

Arfurido (2):

After having her entire Mountain Bandit Clan wiped out by the evil Silvermask, Arfurido, as any young tomboy would, desired immediate vengeance. What she got was an unexpected appearance by Narsus. After Narsus wittingly defeated Silvermask's entire army with only the use of a dust storm, Narsus managed to rescue her. Even if he prevented her vengeance, Arfurido developed an immediate affection for him which led to proposed marriage. Narsus's devotion to her is somewhat...limited, however.

Jaswont (2):

Jaswont makes his first appearance spying on Arislan's plans to precede a Shindran invasion into Peshawal. Being a spy for the nation of Shindra can hardly give anyone the grounds to be trusted, and Jaswont is not really an exception to that rule, but that changes by the ending of the second OVA when Jaswont realizes that no ruler of Shindra compares to the majesty, charm, and grace of Palse's Prince Arislan.

Lajendra (2):

While Lajendra can not really be called an ally of Arislan, the nation of Shindra, which he rules as a result of winning the king's contest, is still allies with Palse. Lajendra began in the story as a ruthless warrior by invading Peshawal with a sneak attack, was later revealed to be a worthless good-for-nothing playboy after his capture, and was finally characterized as a combination of the two by the end of the second OVA. His diabolical actions of using Arislan's army in the war for Shindra and using Daryoon for the final duel shows no end to his wickedness. Still, all in all, he is a weak and cowardly sort of fellow when you get right down to it.

Tous (3):

Master of the Iron Chains. 'Nuff said.

Lusitanians

Silvermask (1):

It becomes known towards the end of the first OAV that Silvermask is indeed Palsian. Why he is working for the Lusitanians becomes evident later on in the series. Because of his permanent disfigurement, Hermes, which is his real name, seeks retaliation and revenge for what Andragoras had done to him those many years ago.

Kharlan (1):

Kharlan's loyalty to Palse was tested and failed in the beginning of the series at the opening battle. Although the general public discovered him to be a traitor a little too late, the actual reasons for Kharlan's betrayal turned out to be a magic spell put upon him by Silvermask's personal magician. Kharlan's Palsian devotion conflicted with the spell and forced him to die nobly after a fight with Daryoon.

Jon Bodan (1):

Jon Bodan is the vicious priest who preaches the word of the Lusitanian God Valdabord. All who do not believe the word of Valdabord are tortured, killed, and conquered under his fanatical jurisdiction. Not surprisingly, some important members of the ruling body of Lusitania think his preachings go a bit too far, and, thus, desire his execution.

Inokentis (1, but really 2):

Inokentis is the puppet ruler of the Kingdom of Lusitania. Although he thinks he controls all power, he is merely a figurehead, and all power is really wielded by his younger brother, Giskarl. Inokentis himself is a rather scrawny man with very little self esteem, a lot of cowardice and bad-decision making skills, and is, in general, an idiot.

Giskarl (same as above):

After the acquisition of Ekubatana, more background information is given dealing with Giskarl, his brother Inokentis, and the fanatical Jon Bodan, the three most important figures of Lusitania. It becomes evident that Inokentis couldn't have possibly had enough courage to pull of an invasion into the not-so-very weak kingdom of Palse. And, although Jon Bodan is a forceful and somewhat convincing man, it is clear that such a lunatic could not possibly command an army of such gigantic size in order to spread the word of his God. Therefore, this can only lead us to two conclusions. One: Giskarl wields all of his brother's power behind his sniveling back, and Two: Giskarl's hunger for power and land is just simple greed and not really a holy war, which is what everyone else believes. Just how far Giskarl will go in the acquisition of other nations remains to be seen.

Zante (2):

The details and facts concerning Kharlan's death arrived a bit cloudy for Zante, who pledged unending loyalty to Silvermask after hearing of his father's demise. Although he is a good fighter, he is a bit stubborn, a bit brash, and just a bit stupid. Further development of his character will probably be evident as the series progresses.

Sarm (3):

While Arislan has Narsus, Silvermask enlisted Sarm to advise his military actions. While Sarm is not as intelligent or wise as the great Narsus, Sarm is no intellectual midget himself. His advice in the attack on Castle Zable succeeded without mishap, and it earned Silvermask a starting base.

Valcacion (4):

Count Valcacion is living (or dead) proof that not all Lusitanians are bad. The effort he put into insuring the best interests of all of his subjects evidently led to his own demise and the demise of his army. Although the Palsians were near enough to storm the castle, his good nature overrode his good judgement, forcing him to keep the castle gate open. This allowed some of the slower Lusitanians to enter, but Arislan's army rushed in before them, causing the downfall of the castle. As a sign of their defeat, Valcacion and his subjects, including innocent women and children, were forced to jump off the castle walls to their deaths because of their Lusitanian faith.

Miscellaneous Characters

Characters that don't really fit in any of the above categories:

Gardeep (2):

Since the Shindran aspect of the series is focused on his brother, Lajendra, very little is known of Gardeep other than the fact that he was the first child of the Shindran King, is a bit uglier than his brother, and is much more devious in an open manner.

Melain (3):

As one of the only surviving members of the Zogt clan (who was not present at the massacre), Melain travels the surrounding nations in search of his sister who may or may not be, but probably is, Arfurido. As a member of the Mountain Bandit Zogts, Melain helps those in need while steering clear of blue-blooded royalty and those with snobbish attitudes.

Bragging Kubard (3):

While being an excellent fighter, Kubard, or the One-eyed Lion, which he is also known as, is also a self-contained laugh riot. Even if he enjoys pummelling large armies single handedly, he also treasures a good laugh.
